History
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Congregation Kodimoh began as an Orthodox minyan in 1916, in
the home of Moses Ehrlich, Kodimoh’s first president. In 1923 its first
building was dedicated on Oakland Street in Springfield, and the congregation
grew and flourished there for many years. In 1957, Rabbi Norman Lamm urged the
Board of Directors to consider seriously a new House of Worship, as it became
apparent that there had been such growth in membership and activities that the
existing facilities were rendered inadequate. Ground was broken in 1959, and
the congregation moved to its current site on Sumner Avenue in Springfield in
1963.
Kodimoh has always been a place where Torah Tradition has
been strongly maintained. In 1956 Kodimoh became affiliated with the Yeshiva
University Synagogue Council, and in 1961, it became a member of the Union of
Orthodox Congregations (“OU”). Kodimoh has maintained strong links with those
and many other important local and national Jewish organizations.
More recently Kodimoh has focused on expanding its programs
and services to the community, with particular emphasis on its Adult Education
and Youth programs, which remain among the best in the area.
